Music is a birthright.

Since Mile 1 in 2013, this simple, profound idea has guided our every action.  It fuels us as a team of artists, educators, and musical beings.  It guides us to the future as we bring multicultural workshop experiences to Mile of Music.  Your participation in our musical community is vital, and empowers others around you to be the music on The Mile!

The Mile of Music Music Education Team’s (MET) founder, Leila Ramagopal Pertl, has embodied this in her work, advocacy, and humanity.  In the beginning, The Mile Team reached out to Leila, wanting to incorporate music education into what has since become an internationally renowned music festival. Leila knew that all people need opportunities to make music, and she curated a space for the very young to the very old to become the music on The Mile.

What started as five music educators bringing Brazilian Samba drums to Houdini Plaza in the rain, has blossomed into a team of over two dozen educators and artists directly engaging, collaborating with, and teaching thousands of Mile of Music attendees year after year.  While the workshop topics change year to year, what does not change is the MET’s commitment to the Mile community by providing quality, authentic, diverse, and engaging music-making experiences.

Come join us, discover your birthright, and be the music on The Mile!
